Bat Engagement Ring

Jennie had a sentimental request to recreate a cherished engagement ring she had lost. The original design featured a heart-shaped fire opal at the center, flanked by two sculpted bats, with two smaller fire opals placed beneath them. True natural fire opals are rare, especially in a heart shape, and I had the unique challenge of sourcing and custom-cutting these stones to match her vision.
The design presented several technical challenges, particularly due to the small size of the ring. The center stone itself was just 4mm in diameter, which provides some reference to the sizes of the bats. Additionally, setting a heart-shaped stone without prongs added a layer of complexity. I also hand-sculpted the bats on either side to the best of my abilities on such a small space. It was done back in 2014 when 12K pixel printers didn’t exist.
Despite these challenges, the finished ring was met with genuine appreciation, and I’m proud to have had the opportunity to craft such a meaningful piece. While I can’t say for certain how closely it mirrors the original, it was well received by the client so I’m happy to have added this special creation to my portfolio.
